The Effect of Air/Moisture Exposure on Urine Strip Test

Abstract
We evaluated the effect of air and/or moisture exposure of urine strips in urinalysis items of pH, protein, glucose and blood. Strips of Ames Multistix-SGR were tested after the exposure to ambient air or air/moisutre(humidity>77%) after 1 day, 4
days,
1 week, and then 1 week interval up to 8 weeks. No significant changes of strips were observed for urine pH and protein up to 8 weeks of exposure, but marked changes were observed for urine glucose and blood. The air and air/moisture exposed gave
false
positive results for glucose from 4 days to 3-4 weeks of exposure, and thereafter gave false negative results. The air and air/moisture exposed strips began to give negative result for blood from 1-4 days of exposure and completely negative
results
after 1 week of exposure. The results of this study suggest that a false positive test for urine glucose and a false negative test for urine blood may be derived from excessive exposure of urine strins(Ames Multistix) to air/moisture.
